Free Discount Codes

The rise of discount codes and vouchers has really been hitting the headlines in the last year or so. As a specialist in this area, I find that many people have questions and concerns about these discounts.

One set of questions that I get asked again and again surrounds whether discount codes are legal and whether they really are free to use. These are legitimate questions to ask.


Let's take a closer look at the way in which the promotional codes work and give some answers. The first point that I'll make is that I've already mentioned discount codes, vouchers and promotion codes.

This can sometimes be a bit confusing but the reality is that all of these terms describe the same thing. You'll find that different websites and writers use differing terms.

So are they free and can you use them?

The answer is that almost all discount codes are issued free of charge by retailers. This may sound a bit strange but they do this in order to encourage people to buy with them and to keep customers coming back.

They distribute the vouchers free of charge, meaning that you should be able to find them by checking out a discounts listings site.

One point to note here is that some listings sites will charge you in order to access the codes. Since those codes were issued to the listings site free of charge, such an approach never seems particularly fair from a consumer point of view.

My own thoughts on this are that you would be well advised to avoid any sites that attempt to charge you.

Some stores may well have strings attached to the use of codes - this is, in fact, quite common.

You may, for example, need to spend a certain amount in order to get a discount. Make sure that you understand how the discount code works in order to ensure that you pay less.
