The Universities and the College have their own purpose built accommodation, which tends to be offered to first year students. However, if you are arriving late through clearing, or you are further into your undergraduate course or maybe even a post graduate you will find that you will have a large number of options. The private rented sector is highly developed and this has been the result of landlords, the City and the Universities having worked together for many years.

The City and the Universities set up a Student Property Accreditation Scheme a number of years ago which has led to a virtuous positive cycle of higher standards which has led to improving rents. Landlords, Students, the City Council and the University authorities have all been pleased by the result, which is that there is now student accommodation in Newcastle that would be classed as of a professional standard anywhere else in the country.


There are two major reference points when looking for suitable student accommodation in newcastle. This is the Accommodation or Housing Offices located within the Universities themselves. These offices advertise all the property that is on offer and can give guidance on prices, standards and even tenancy agreements. Unfortunately the Housing Offices compile lists that end to lag behind the private sector who are often keen to air their new offers to their students clients as early as possible!

To get to grips with the private sector accommodation one needs to fix a personal budget. The different areas of Newcastle have accommodation of markedly different prices. Most of the private sector agents are located in the various locales and advertise and let property that are around the doors. Some of the various offices are owned by the landlords and only work with their own portfolios. These tend not to charge agency fees. Some will have a mix of their own and other landlord properties available and some will be pure agents, in which case some form of fee will be payable.
